Mapping Maternal–Child Relational Dynamics in Early Childhood: Developmental Change in Biobehavioral Synchrony and Links to Relationship Quality and Child Emotional Adaptation
Early childhood is a period of rapid change in how children experience and regulate emotion. When young children encounter frustration, uncertainty, or challenging tasks, they often rely on caregivers to help regulate both behavior and physiological arousal. Across development, these repeated experiences of co-regulation may contribute to children’s growing capacity to manage difficult emotions more independently.
In the MRI-funded project Mapping Maternal–Child Relational Dynamics in Early Childhood, Dr. Nicole Perry (University of Texas at Austin) examines how patterns of mother–child synchrony change between ages 2.5 and 3.5 and how these developmental changes relate to relationship quality and children’s emotional adjustment.
Synchrony can occur at both behavioral and physiological levels. Behavioral synchrony involves reciprocal communication, shared attention, coordinated behavior, and contingent responses between parent and child. Physiological synchrony refers to the extent to which their biological responses become coordinated during an interaction. Examining these processes together provides a window into how regulation develops within the parent–child relationship.
The study focuses in particular on respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), a measure of heart-rate variability associated with physiological regulation and responsiveness to environmental demands. By examining mothers’ and children’s RSA simultaneously during challenging interactions, the research team can investigate how their regulatory responses change in relation to one another from moment to moment.
Importantly, greater synchrony is not necessarily synonymous with healthier functioning. During early childhood, children are developing greater autonomy and regulatory capacity. A decrease in mother–child synchrony may therefore sometimes reflect developmental progress rather than relational disengagement. A caregiver may intervene less directly while remaining emotionally available, allowing the child greater opportunity to regulate independently.
The project consequently asks not simply whether mothers and children become more or less synchronized over time, but how the balance between coordination and independence changes as children develop—and whether particular developmental patterns are associated with stronger relationships and more adaptive emotional functioning.
The study builds on data collected from 103 mothers and their children at approximately 2.5 years of age. The same families will participate in a second assessment when children are approximately 3.5 years old, allowing the research team to examine developmental change within individual mother–child dyads rather than relying on comparisons between children of different ages.
During laboratory assessments, mothers and children wear portable cardiac monitors while completing a structured problem-solving task together. Their interactions are recorded and coded moment by moment for shared attention, reciprocal engagement, contingent responding, and relational warmth. These behavioral observations are integrated with simultaneous measures of physiological regulation.
Children also participate in frustration tasks designed to capture developing regulatory strategies, including help-seeking, distraction, expressions of frustration, and persistence. Caregiver reports provide additional information about children’s emotional and behavioral adjustment and mothers’ own psychological and regulatory functioning.
This multimethod, longitudinal design allows the project to examine three related processes: how behavioral and physiological synchrony changes across early childhood; whether these changes are associated with parent–child relationship quality and children’s emotional adaptation; and how mothers’ own emotion regulation and psychological functioning may contribute to the development of dyadic synchrony.
By following regulatory processes within the same parent–child relationships over time, this project situates children’s emotional development within an evolving interpersonal system. Self-regulation is understood not simply as an individual capacity, but as one that develops through repeated experiences of co-regulation, responsiveness, and increasing autonomy.
In doing so, the study may clarify how healthy parent–child relationships adapt as children become more capable of managing emotional challenges themselves. Understanding when coordination is supportive—and when greater independence represents developmental progress—offers a more nuanced account of how connection and autonomy develop together during early childhood.
